Barely skittering afore the approaching penumbra of a new travel theme, here’s a contribution to Ailsa’s Where’s My Backpack Weekly Travel Theme…

A water strider skates in a quiet eddy on Stuart Creek in the Trinity Alps of northern California. The diffraction from the strider’s legs in the surface tension causes the outer oval shadows, its legs and body connect the dots. Note the light touch of the middle pair of legs compared to the fore and aft pairs. Achieving a proper focus of insect, diffraction and shadow together was challenging; it took finding a single strider in its own little territory of the right depth and angle of sun, and waiting for it to get used to the large shadow of the photographer looming overhead.
Magnificent! (patience pays large dividends)
Thanks Ebb!
Next time I’ll remember to provide some shade for the back of my neck while I wait…
Wow!!! Amazing photo!!!
Thanks DoRo!
Welcome!
Wow! Words escape me for this one! Brilliant!
Thanks Gunta! They move so quickly, I deleted scores of photos I thought had a strider in them. There one instant, gone the next…
Looks like you have far more patience than I do.
Wow, incredible shot!
Welcome Amy, and thanks!
I hate those guys…photo is so real… I’ve seen those shadows from them… They like water skate on top of the water… Had a fish jump up and grab one once….
